Chicago White Sox (47-51 through July 21)
Edwin Jackson (6-7, 3.97)

The Chicago White Sox were four games under .500 through Thursday yet sat just five games back of division leader Detroit and 4.5 games behind Cleveland, whom they’ll visit this weekend.

Edwin Jackson will start against the Tribe. He’ll hope to keep the momentum going from his last start, in which he tossed a complete-game shutout against Detroit. If there’s one thing we know about Jackson, however, it’s that his previous start tells us little about what he’ll do next. His earned runs over his last five outings: four, zero, four, four, zero. He does have a sparkling 8-1 record and 2.70 career ERA against Cleveland. His 1.42 WHIP suggests he’s been a bit lucky against the Indians but Jackson has always been a type who allows lots of baserunners and fights his way out of jams. This is a guy who once threw a no-hitter yet walked six batters.

Cleveland Indians (51-46 through July 21)
David Huff (1-0, 0.00)

The Cleveland Indians remain very much in the AL Central race but they’re starting to limp through the dog days of summer. Injuries are sapping them of their pop; Grady Sizemore and Shin-Soo Choo are out with long-term injuries. Michael Brantley is battling his way back from heat exhaustion. While the Indians have been a nice story this season, they’re not laden with offensive talent, so even a few missing guys can seriously weaken them. It’s thus not too surprising that they’ve lost four of six through Thursday. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

I was going to call David Huff a rookie – but he ain’t. He has 39 major-league starts to his name. Who knew?  It just shows how obscure life as a Cleveland Indian was in 2009 and 2010. Huff made his season debut on July 18 with seven scoreless innings against Detroit.

MLB Free pick:

It’s always scary to bet on Jackson but, for such an inconsistent pitcher, it’s worth holding on tight to that 8-1 record against Cleveland. Also, I don’t trust Huff. He’s 28. If he was going to be something special, we’d know by now.

He’s a homer-prone pitcher who will face a powerful White Sox lineup on Saturday.

I think he comes back to Earth.

White Sox vs Indians prediction: White Sox 7, Indians 4
