The Boston Red Sox quickly erased the anguish of being swept at home by the White Sox when they swept Oakland in three wild games over the weekend. Adrian Gonzalez has (deservedly) garnered many headlines in Boston this season but a man who had six hits in the Oakland series – and who is quietly posting throwback numbers – is David Ortiz. Big Papi is batting .325 and leads the BoSox in homers (13) and OPS (.987).
He and the streaking Boston offense will try to back up unheralded ace Jon Lester at Yankee Stadium tonight. Lester is 7-1 over 13 career starts against the Bronx Bombers but he still has some demons to conquer. He’s allowed four-plus runs in four of his last five starts, one of which came against New York. He won despite allowing four runs, walking four and serving up two homers over six rocky innings.

Freddy Garcia (4-4, 3.34)

However, the four runs Garcia allowed in 5.1 innings that night qualified as his worst outing of the season. For the most part, Freddy has been surprisingly serviceable as a Yankee in 2011, allowing three earned runs or fewer in seven of his nine starts.

Still – Boston is streaking, Freddy is ordinary and Lester, struggling or not, never seems to lose against the Yanks. Maybe he’ll get up for this game and snap the slump.
