Boston Red Sox (35-26 through June 8)
Clay Buchholz (4-3, 3.82)

Through Wednesday, the BoSox had won five straight games, scoring at least six runs in each of those wins. From David Ortiz to Carl Crawford to Adrian Gonzalez, it seems everyone is swinging a big stick in Boston these days.

Pitching, obviously, has been a different story. Young gun Clay Buchholz gets the ball in Toronto Friday night after allowing five runs in 4.2 innings his last time out. He’s had plenty of good outings this season but plenty of bad ones, too. It’s worth noting that he’s dominant at the Rogers Centre, going 4-2 with a 1.69 ERA in his career. Even against power bats like Jose Bautista, he’s never allowed a homer in that park.

Toronto Blue Jays (32-30 through June 8)
Jo-Jo Reyes (2-4, 4.16)

Every time I glance at the American League East standings, I’m surprised to see the Jays not only still afloat, but over .500. Their pitching was supposed to improve dramatically this season but it’s the offense carrying the team instead. The Jays are a top-six team in runs, batting average, OPS, homers and stolen bases. Jose Bautista obviously has been God this season – but what about Adam Lind? He quietly has four homers and 10 RBI over his last three games.

What do we do with Jo-Jo Reyes? Two weeks ago, he was the laughing stock of baseball, tying a major-league record by going 28 starts without a win. Now, he’s the proud owner of a two-game winning streak. Can he keep things going against a Boston team that chased him after three innings on April 16?

MLB Trends:

Over is 7-0-2 in BOS last 9 overall.
BOS are 8-1 in their last 9 road games.
Over is 18-5-4 in BOS last 27 Fri. games.
Over is 9-2-1 in TOR last 12 overall.
TOR are 26-7 in their last 33 Fri. games.
BOS are 6-2 in Buchholzs last 8 starts vs. TOR.
BOS are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings in Toronto.

The pick:

I expect the Jays to push Boston hard this weekend – but more on Saturday and Sunday. The matchup ain’t good for Friday. Buchholz’s history is too strong against the Jays and Reyes walked eight guys over his two wins. He’s due to get rocked again.

Red Sox vs Blue Jays prediction: Red Sox 7 Blue jays 3
