Boston Red Sox vs. Toronto Blue Jays Preview

The Boston rotation is hurting with John Lackey and Daisuke Matsuzaka recovering from Tommy John surgery and closer Andrew Bailey is out until, at least, the All Star break with a thumb injury. MLB lines have the Red Sox as the slight favorite tonight with a run total of 9.5 runs.

In last night’s game the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays 4-2.

This season the Blue Jays have a run line W/L record of 3-1 and an O/U record of 2-2 and the Red Sox have a run line WL record of 3-1 with an O/U record of 2-2.

Bard has pitched well in the bullpen for the last few seasons with a 2.88 career ERA and opponents are only hitting .190 against him.

The Red Sox were staring 0-4 in the face last night, but scored 3 runs in the 9th inning to pull out a win. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Kyle Drabek (4-5, 6.06 ERA in 2011) takes the mound for the Blue Jays and he has not pitched at home since June of last season when he was shelled for 8 runs in only 4 innings. He really has to worry about the middle of the lineup of the Red Sox in David Ortiz and Adrian Gonzalez, who each are hitting .467 with 7 hits in 15 at bats.

Only 1 full time player for the Blue Jays is hitting above .300 in Kelly Johnson, but Toronto is getting key hits and so far after 4 games they rank 6th in the Majors in runs.

There are several Toronto players that are hitting below the Mendoza line and they need to start hitting or the team will not survive long in the killer AL East.

In some betting trends for this AL East match up the Red Sox are 3-12 in their last 15 road games, 1-6 in their last 7 games as a road favorite, and they have an Over record of 10-4-1 in their last 15 games.

The Blue Jays are 0-4 in their last 4 games as an underdog, 1-4 in their last 5 games following a loss, and they have an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games as an underdog.

The Red Sox have won 15 of their last 22 games against the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Jason’s Pick: I think the hard-throwing Bard will have a good outing and the Red Sox bats will erupt and hammer Drabek tonight, as Boston will win and I would take the Over as well.
