Philadelphia Phillies (99-60 through September 25)
Roy Oswalt (8-10, 3.86)

Is it complacency? The Phillies’ win over the Mets on Sunday snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Roy Oswalt gets the nod for the Phils against Atlanta on Tuesday. After he dominated the competition late last year when he came over in a trade from Houston, Oswalt hasn’t flourished the same way this season. Back problems have messed with his consistency. He’s been tagged for five-plus runs twice in his last three starts.

Oswalt has faced the Atlanta Braves 11 times in his career, 10 times as a starter, and has just one win to show for it. However, that victory came this season. Oswalt has a 2.08 ERA over two 2011 starts against the Braves.

Atlanta Braves (89-70 through September 25)
Derek Lowe (9-16, 4.92)

The Braves’ tour through the NL East in September hasn’t been successful. Facing the Mets, Marlins and Nationals in succession, they’ve lost three straight series. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Now just a game up on the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL Wildcard through Sunday’s games, they’ll try to right the ship at home to the Phillies this week.

Derek Lowe gets the call on Tuesday. His 16 losses so far this season are a career worst and a stunning number for someone on an 89-win team. September has been an utter nightmare for Lowe; in four starts this month, he’s 0-4 with an 8.24 ERA.

MLB Trends

PHI are 2-8 in their last 10 overall.
PHI are 2-8 in their last 10 games on grass.
Under is 15-4 in PHI last 19 overall.
ATL are 2-8 in Lowes last 10 starts on grass.
ATL are 2-7 in Lowes last 9 Tue. starts.
Over is 14-5 in Lowes last 19 starts on grass.

The pick:

Though Oswalt isn’t at his best, Lowe is worse off at the moment. The sinkerballer’s sinker ain’t sinkin’ and he has no confidence right now. The Phillies have beaten him two straight times, scoring 11 runs (nine earned) in 11 innings.

Look for Hunter Pence and Chase Utley to lead the charge in a Phillies victory on Tuesday. Pence continues to flourish since joining the Phillies via trade and is a .471 hitter in 17 at-bats against Lowe. Utley is 15 for 36 (.417) with a pair of homers off Lowe.

Bet on Lowe to disappoint again – and on the Braves to lose.

Phillies vs Braves prediction: Phillies 5, Braves 3
