New York Yankees (68-42 through August 4)
Freddy Garcia (10-7, 3.22)

For whatever reason, the Bronx Bombers arrive in Boston on a tear, having won seven straight games through Thursday. They’re winning with a rare combination of power and small ball, leading the majors in homers but also quietly ranking second in stolen bases.

With the seasons Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson are having, it’s no surprise that the Yanks are posting astronomical run totals more nights than not. But the pitching continues to surprise; New York has the sixth-best team ERA in baseball.

Freddy Garcia hopes to continue his improbable success Sunday night at Fenway Park. Once a homer-prone pitcher, Garcia hasn’t allowed a long ball in nine starts.

Boston Red Sox (68-42 through August 4)
Josh Beckett (9-4, 2.20)

The Yankees are charging hard but the Red Sox haven’t lost too much ground in the American League East, as they’d won four oF six entering Friday’s action. Boston is the only team scoring more runs per game than New York this season, largely because of David Ortiz’s resurgence and because Adrian Gonzalez has so perfectly met the lofty expectations placed open him for 2011. A-Gone is batting .356 with MLB-best 91 RBI on the year. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Josh Beckett locks horns with the Yankees Sunday for the 26th time in his regular-season career. He has a 5.52 lifetime ERA against them with 25 homers allowed in just 153.1 innings but is still 13-7 all-time.

MLB Trends:

Under is 21-6-2 in NYY last 29 road games.
NYY are 38-15 in their last 53 games on grass.
NYY are 36-15 in their last 51 overall.
BOS are 21-5 in their last 26 Sun. games.
BOS are 13-5 in their last 18 home games.
Under is 24-10-4 in BOS last 38 Sun. games.
NYY are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings.
Over is 6-2-1 in Becketts last 9 starts vs. NYY.

Free MLB pick:

As well as Garcia has pitched this season, the Red Sox are just about the only team to beat him up. They’ve tagged him for 10 runs, nine earned, and three homers over three appearances (eight innings).

On the flip side, though Beckett has taken his lumps against the Yankees in the past, he’s demolished them this season, going 3-0 with a 0.86 ERA and 25 strikeouts in 21 innings.

Considering that Beckett has also lost just once at home this season, all signs point to a Boston victory. A note to Terry Francona: start newly acquired Mike Aviles on Sunday night.

He’s a .636 career hitter against Garcia.

Sunday Night Baseball prediction: Red Sox 6, Yankees 3
