New York Mets (45-42 through July 6)
Mike Pelfrey (5-7, 4.64)

A month ago, they were an afterthought. But the Mets suddenly find themselves on the fringe of the National League Wild Card race after going 20-13 since the start of June. The Mets got some offensive explosions over the last couple of weeks – anyone else notice that Jason Bay’s bat woke up? – but the arms have been doing the best work of late.

Through Wednesday, the Mets had won four straight and held opponents to three runs or less in all those victories. Their starting staff is stepping up at just the right time with Jose Reyes joining David Wright and Ike Davis on the disabled list this week.

Mike Pelfrey is fresh off six innings of shutout ball against the Dodgers. His WHIP, opponents ‘batting average and walk rate are nearly identical to last year’s but his homer rate has more than doubled, which is why his ERA is a run higher than last year’s total. He’s 2-7 with a 6.05 ERA over 11 road starts this season. Gulp.

San Francisco Giants (49-39 through July 6)
Matt Cain (7-5, 3.22)

The San Francisco Giants are perhaps a little lucky that no one else is stepping up in the National League West race, as their play has been a bit spotty of late. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Normally, pitching is the defending world champs’ bread and butter, but the Giants have allowed five or more runs four straight times, losing three of those contests.

Matt Cain, who pitches Sunday night, allowed five runs in a loss to the San Diego Padres last week. With Buster Posey, Brandon Belt and Freddy Sanchez on the DL and Cody Ross and Pat Burrell both nursing nagging injuries, Cain and the Giants starters can’t expect much run support going forward.

They’ll have to dig themselves out of trouble on their own.

MLB Trends:

Under is 8-2 in NYM last 10 overall.
Under is 8-2 in NYM last 10 on grass.
Over is 6-2 in NYM last 8 Sun. games.
Over is 6-2 in SF last 8 overall.
Over is 6-2 in SF last 8 on grass.
SF are 8-3 in their last 11 games following a win.
NYM are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings.

Free MLB pick:

Even though the Giants have shown some alarming trends and the Mets have played better lately, I foresee a trend reversal on Saturday night. Cain sparkles at home, going 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA this season, and we know Pelfrey is useless away from Citi Field.

The Mets’ depleted lineup will start posting donuts sooner or later and Cain is the type of tough pitcher who can do that to hitters more nights than not.

I’d expect a low-scoring affair (as Pelfrey does have a 2.04 career ERA against the Giants) and a narrow victory for San Fran on Sunday night.

Sunday night baseball prediction: Giants 3, Mets 1
