Through Monday they’d won eight of their last 12 games. Part of that hot streak was due to an offensive explosion last week. Over the last couple of victories, pitching has been the key. R.A. Dickey and Chris Capuano tossed gems on consecutive days.

Next up for the Mets is Jonathon Niese, who has been solidly above average for most of this season and has seven quality starts in his last nine tries. His splits are odd this season. On the road, he has a better WHIP and opponents hit .251 off him compared to .270 at home, but his ERA is about half a run higher.

Los Angeles Dodgers (37-49 through July 4)
Hiroki Kuroda (6-9, 2.90)

The Dodgers’ recent play represents their season in a nutshell. They’ve lost five of six and have failed to top two runs four times over that span. At some point, management will need to bring in some more bats to support Matt Kemp, but it’s a tall order considering the franchise’s financial woes. Hiroki Kuroda will try to keep New York’s bats at bay on Wednesday. As efficient as he normally is, he’s been shockingly bad against the Mets in his career. Over six starts versus the Mets, Kuroda is 1-4 with a 5.70 ERA. That line includes an uncharacteristic 14 walks and six homers in 30 innings.
