San Francisco Giants (22-17 through May 15)
Jonathan Sanchez (3-2, 3.68)

The defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants have done a fine job erasing their slow start to the 2011 season of late, winning seven of eight. They swept division rivals Arizona and Colorado at home over that stretch.

We know what we get with San Fran. It hasn’t scored more than four runs once during his 7-1 run. It’s allowed three runs or fewer in all seven wins. The Giants’ 3.46 runs per game mark is second-worst in baseball; their 3.31 team ERA is fourth-best. These guys can pitch like crazy and they can’t hit. It doesn’t help that the resurgent Pablo Sandoval remains sidelined with a hand injury.

Jonathan Sanchez is up to his usual tricks, striking out everybody and walking everybody. He hasn’t gone more than 6.1 innings in a start this season yet and has walked six batters in two of his last three starts. Bet on MLB at BetOnline

Colorado Rockies (20-18 through May 15)
Ubaldo Jimenez (0-3, 6.67)

After a hot start, the Colorado Rockies are in a bona fide freefall, losing eight of 10, and it’s easy to see why: their best players just haven’t been their best players. Troy Tulowitzki is batting .173 in 13 games this month. Carlos Gonzalez sits at .244 for May and isn’t 100 per cent after getting beaned on the foot over the weekend.

Worst of all, ace Ubaldo Jimenez has been anything but. He’s allowed four-plus runs in four of six starts and has 22 walks in 29.2 innings. The Rockies insist his flaw is mechanical, not physical.

MLB Trends:

SF are 7-2 in their last 9 overall.
SF are 7-2 in their last 9 games on grass.
Under is 6-2 in SF last 8 overall.
COL are 2-6 in their last 8 Tue. games.
COL are 3-8 in their last 11 overall.
COL are 3-8 in their last 11 games on grass.
SF are 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.

The pick:

Since the Rockies say Jimenez is healthy, he has to turn things around sooner or later, but I’d rather let him prove to me that he deserves my bet. Sanchez isn’t scared by Coors Field; he’s 4-2 there and has just one homer allowed over 44 career innings at the notorious hitter’s haven. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jimenez bounced back slightly against the weak Giants lineup, as his only good outing this season came against them, but it won’t be enough to topple the streaking champs.

Giants vs Rockies prediction: Giants 4, Rockies 3
