That said, there have been a few bright spots in La-La Land of late. The big one is Matt Kemp, who continues to compile MVP-type numbers. The outfielder has five homers and 14 RBI over his last seven games.
Another positive has been Clayton Kershaw, who will start on Thursday for the Dodgers. He continues to justify his former first-round draft status, whiffing 96 batters and walking 26 over 85.2 innings this season. Kershaw finally got tagged in his last start, allowing six runs in 6.2 innings, but it happens. He had a shutout going after five innings in that game.
Colorado Rockies (28-32 through June 7)
Jhoulys Chacin (6-4, 3.19)
The Colorado Rockies haven’t been a disaster of late, alternating wins and losses. But they can’t seem to gain momentum in the standings. A rapidly drying-up offense is the problem. A guy like Jhoulys Chacin can’t be to blame for the team’s ho-hum ways. He leads the starting rotation in wins, ERA, WHIP and strikeouts.

The pick:
Kershaw certainly isn’t immune to Coors Field. In eight starts there, he has a 5.44 ERA and eight homers allowed over 43 innings. And Chacin has a 2.40 lifetime ERA against the Dodgers. However, in this case, I’ll play a hunch and go against the numbers. Kershaw is catching Colorado at the right time. A struggling offense doesn’t want to face a guy with his stuff.
And, with L.A.’s offense trending upward, he should get the support he needs to win on the road.
