St. Louis Cardinals (30-21)
Jake Westbrook (4-3, 5.17)
The St. Louis Cardinals keep finding ways to win regardless of what obstacles pop up in front of them. Lately, their offense has dried up slightly, largely because of injuries to Matt Holliday, Lance Berkman and David Freese, but the pitching is picking up the slack. St. Louis has won eight of 10 and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in nine of its last 10 games.
Even Jake Westbrook has joined the party of late. He started the season shakily but has allowed three earned runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. Though he’s never started a game at Coors Field, he’s 2-0 with a 1.15 ERA against Colorado in his career. Westbrook has also done a phenomenal job keeping the ball in the park this year, allowing just three homers in 54 innings.
Colorado Rockies (24-24)
Ubaldo Jimenez (0-4, 5.44)
After his phenomenal start in 2011, it’s strange to see Ubaldo Jimenez still without a win this season with June knocking on the door. He has the talent to turn things around but the Rockies’ ace still hasn’t harnessed his control. He’s walked at least five batters in three of his last four starts. Jimenez has never had good command but the problem this season is that his velocity is also down. He’s not overpowering hitters and matching the walks with strikeouts the way he normally does.
MLB Trends:
Under is 9-1 in STL last 10 overall.
Under is 9-1 in STL last 10 on grass.
STL are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.
COL are 2-8 in their last 10 Fri. games.
COL are 1-10 in Jimenezs last 11 starts.
COL are 1-9 in Jimenezs last 10 starts on grass.
The pick:
I think Jimenez will have to turn the calendar page again before he gets that elusive win. The offense behind him is sputtering badly. Colorado has lost six of eight, scoring 1, 6, 2, 1, 2 and 1 runs in those defeats. Westbrook seems dialed in for the Cards right now so the Rockies’ bats might stay cold. I wouldn’t bet on Jimenez again until he earns back my trust. I suggest you do the same.
