New York is running away with the difficult AL East.
The Yankees have had some injury concerns of late. Alex Rodriguez is on the disabled list with a fractured hand. Brett Gardner is out for the season, but the team went out and picked up another speedster in the form of Ichiro Suzuki. Ichiro has a 12-game hitting streak since coming to the Yankees, so it seems to be working out well.
This offense leads the majors in home runs with 168 this year. Curtis Granderson has 29 homers to lead the team. Robinson Cano and Derek Jeter are both batting .314 to lead the team. This is one of the best offenses in the majors.
Phil Hughes started the season slowly, but his improvement of late has really helped the team separate from the pack in the AL East.
Detroit made a couple wise moves at the trade deadline as well. The team grabbed Omar Infante to make the lineup deeper and have a solid second baseman. Justin Verlander has been great at the top, but the team needs more from the rest of the rotation. Rick Porcello starts in this one, and he has been extremely inconsistent this year. Austin Jackson’s amazing season at the leadoff spot has really sparked this offense. Miguel Cabrera is hitting .325 with 27 homers and 91 RBI’s.
Prince Fielder is proving his value by hitting .311 with 79 RBI’s. This team has a ton of potential, but they need to show some more consistency.
The Yankees are 8-3 in Hughes’ last 11 starts. Porcello hasn’t fared well against the Yankees in the past. New York is the more complete team right now.
