Chris Sale has been one of the most surprising star pitchers in baseball this year. A year ago Sale was in the bullpen as a seventh or eighth inning guy for Chicago. Now, he is a starter with a brilliant 2.72 ERA. He has 14 wins and an amazing 1.06 WHIP.
The White Sox offense has been led this year by guys who were terrible in 2011. Adam Dunn leads the majors with 36 homers, and Alex Rios is hitting .300. Paul Konerko continues to be the team’s most reliable hitter in clutch situations. Everyone just keeps waiting for the Tigers to overtake the White Sox, but it hasn’t happened yet. New York had a 12 game lead in the AL East not too terribly long ago, but now they lead the AL East by just four games. Tampa Bay and Baltimore are both playing terrific baseball, and the Yankees have been very shaky of late. New York hits far more home runs than any other team in the majors. Everyone in their day-to-day lineup has at least 10 home runs on the season.
Derek Jeter is now hitting an amazing .324, and he led off last night’s game with a homer.
Robinson Cano has been slumping of late, but Ichiro Suzuki is giving the team a nice offensive boost. Phil Hughes has been very inconsistent this year. Hughes is 12-10 with a 4.23 ERA this season.
Sale hasn’t been quite as dominating of late, and the Yankees will be desperate for a win. The Yankees are 4-0 in Hughes’ last 4 starts against the White Sox. The value play here is the Yankees.
