The New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles will play the rubber game in their three game midweek series on Thursday evening in Baltimore. The Yankees send A.J. Burnett to the hill, while the Orioles counter with the ultra-talented youngster, Brian Matusz. The Orioles held off the Yankees in the first game, but C.C. Sabathia dominated in the second and the Yankees won big.

To say that the Baltimore Orioles have struggled this year is a major understatement. The Orioles are a dismal 4-16 on the season and they are just 1-6 at home. The team isn’t exactly stocked full of young stars that have the fan base preparing for better years anytime soon either. Brian Matusz is certainly one of their top young prospects, and he has proven he has the ability to be a very good starter. Matusz, just 23 years of age, was the talk of the town after spring training, where he pitched 24 1-3 innings and had an ERA of just 2.59. He has shown flashes of brilliance in the regular season, but he is still a bit raw.

A.J. Burnett is off to a good start this year for the Yankees. The Yankees are actually 9-3 in the last 12 games he has started, so he has done a good job putting them in a position to win. The Bronx Bombers clearly have one of the best lineups in all of baseball, but some of their big boppers are struggling a bit so far this season. Mark Teixeira is hitting just .133 and Alex Rodriguez is at just .260 with only two home runs on the season thus far. Robinson Cano has been on fire, and his 30 hits and 18 runs scored have really helped the team get to their current 12-7 record.

The Yankees have definitely had the Orioles number over the last few years. The Yankees are 21-6 in the last 27 meetings between these two teams. These are two teams that have gone in opposite directions, as the Yankees are 88-38 in their last 126 games, while the Orioles are an awful 14-37 in their last 51 games.

John Hirschbeck will be the home plate umpire in this one and he is known for having a pretty wide strike zone. Since 2005, the under is 67-40 in the games where Hirschbeck was behind home plate. Expect both pitchers to get plenty of calls in this one.

The Yankees are the big favorite in this one, and deservedly so. The Orioles have a chance here, but they’ll need Matusz to pitch a gem.

Betting Trends:

The total has gone OVER in 4 of Detroit’s last 5 games at home
The total has gone OVER in 4 of Detroit’s last 6 games
Detroit is 2-4 SU in its last 6 games when playing Minnesota
Minnesota is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games on the road
Minnesota is 14-5 SU in its last 19 games
Minnesota is 4-2 SU in its last 6 games when playing Detroit

Yankees/Orioles Free MLB Pick

Yankees/Orioles under 8.5- Both of these pitchers appear to be pitching well of late and a home plate umpire like Hirschbeck makes the under look very attractive. The under is 19-6-1 in the last 26 games Hirschbeck has called.

I think Matusz can slow down the Yankees somewhat, and as long as Burnett brings his best stuff I don’t think the Orioles can put many runs on the board here.
