St. Louis Cardinals (trail series 0-1)
Edwin Jackson (1-0, 3.00)

They dropped Game 1 of the NLDS to Philadelphia on the road before winning Game 2 and changing the course of the series. Edwin Jackson gets the ball tonight as the Cards try to repeat the trend.

No one questions Jackson’s stuff but he’s as erratic as pitchers come. He went 5-2 over 13 appearances (12 starts) after arriving in St. Louis via midseason trade, compiling a 3.58 ERA but walking 23 batters and allowing opponents to hit .300 off him. His walks were down overall this season but he was generally more hittable than normal.

Jackson beat the Phillies to win Game 3, allowing two runs and walking just one over six tidy innings. Tonight presents a tougher challenge for him according to his road record. Jackson was 7-6 but had a 4.76 ERA away from home this season.

Milwaukee Brewers (lead series 1-0)
Shaun Marcum (0-1, 13.50)

Can anyone stop the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee? Beast Mode is out of control. The Brew Crew led baseball with a 57-24 regular season record and are 3-0 in the playoffs at Miller Park. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

It isn’t just that pitchers like Yovani Gallardo have been better at home; even hitters like Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun have been far more deadly at their home park.

Shaun Marcum, however, is a curious case. He had a fine first season with the team but was one of the only Brewers to fare better on the road. He was actually 8-3 with a 2.21 ERA away from Miller Park versus 5-4 with a 4.81 ERA at home. Marcum then reversed his own trend by being lit up on the road against Arizona in Game 3 of the NLDS.

The pick:

We have no easy decision tonight, particularly because Marcum got rocked so badly his last time out. Personally, I’m giving the ex-Blue Jay a mulligan. He’s a smart pitcher who throws plenty of strikes most of the time. Even if he wasn’t always great at home this season, knowing how confident his teammates are there should give him a mental boost.

Given that Jackson wasn’t great on the road and that the Brewers remain unstoppable at Miller Park, now 60-24 there including regular season and playoffs, I like them tonight.
