New York

New York is currently in third place behind Baltimore as well, facing the struggles with their pitching and aging lineup they have been dealing with all season.

They have now lost three in a row to the team they are trying to catch in the division – the first two to Baltimore – in a race that looks like it will be determined by those two pointers. They need to bounce back.

When Masahiro Tanaka is on the mound the Yankees look great. With David Phelps less so. However, Phelps was very good in his last outing against Toronto beating them last week.

It was the most pitches he has thrown all season though and as a guy who started the season in bullpen I wonder how he is going to respond. Even under the best of conditions he is someone I am more likely to fade.

Toronto

June has been a struggle for the Jays but they are still in first place as we head into the final week of the month. The pitching has been off, the hitting has cooled and now they are dealing with the injury bug – Brett Lawrie is out and Jose Bautista is unlikely to play on Tuesday.

Those two injuries rob the Jays of some power but the injury to Lawrie is more important than you realize as he was playing second and third base brilliantly, allowing the Jays to have awesome flexibility with their lineup.

Mark Buehrle has enjoyed a wicked first half but like the team his numbers have cooled in June. The Jays have lost his last three start but it is hard to pin the blame solely on him as they Jays have only scored 5 runs over those three outings.

One of those three was in the Bronx and the veteran lefty will have to be careful against a powerful Yankees lineup.

He has given up a home in each of his last three starts.

I am not sure the Jays are primed to go on another run but I think this team plays better when they feel more like the underdog than frontrunner.

Yes they are in first place but with injuries mounting they are being forced to be a little scrappier than other first place teams.

Look for them to jump all over the Yankees again tonight.
