New York

They just took two of three from the struggling Blue Jays over the weekend and continue their road trip on to Tampa.

The American League is real tight right now with just 4 wins separating top to bottom – which is where I thought the Yankees would be. Even though reinforcements are coming I think that is where they will end up

One of the main reasons New York is doing well is starting pitching.

It begins with ace C.C. Sabathia who has rattled off three winning starts since losing the opener to Boston. People wanted to cite all the innings he has thrown over the years for that early poor performance but it looks like that was way premature at this point.

The big lefty has essentially a seasons worth of starts against the Rays with just middling success (a 10-9 record). His peripherals show that he might have been unlucky more than a couple of times. The lineup he will face is not all that intimidating.

Tampa Bay

The Rays are looking better than they have all season right now. They just swept the A’s over the weekend with fantastic pitching yielding just 4 runs over the three games. This is still a team that is going to struggle to score all season long but if the pitching remains true they can challenge.

Plus it always seems like the Rays get up when they are playing the Yankees. Even though the Yanks probably still look at them like a little brother.

Tampa is countering Sabathia with a lefty of their own in Matt Moore. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Moore has always had impressive stuff but last year in his first full season in the bigs he had trouble harnessing it. It is early but this season he seems to have figured things out a little more. He has been super stingy with a .133 batting average against and an even 1.00 ERA.

The one thing he needs to learn is how to economize more as he has yet to pitch into the 7th inning in a start this season. The Yankees have hit him hard in the past using their patient approach to wait him out.

Great value on the underdog Yankees on this one. Both pitchers are on good runs but who do you trust more at this point. Getting the extra value on New York is well worth it even though Moore has been great thus far.

I just don’t trust the Rays to be able to break through with enough runs on a regular basis this season.

Over/Under: Over Score
Prediction: New York 5 – Tampa 4
