New York

They find themselves under .500 now giving some breathing room to Toronto and Baltimore. In the losses the offense has been pretty dry which is nothing new this season.

The Yankees are not even averaging 4 runs per game with no regulars batting even as high as .290. At this point you have to wonder if they are going to make a move to give them a spark or whether they shot their wad in the offseason.

Speaking of the offseason you can not argue with the investment they made to get Masahiro Tanaka.

The “rookie” is 11-3 and proving that he more than has enough stuff to be successful in the long term in the American League. He is tied for the MLB lead in wins and complete games, is third in ERA and 4th in WHIP.

There is a very good chance he could win ROY and the Cy Young this season.

Minnesota

The Twins have not been playing good ball lately either having lost 7 of their 10.

That has sunk them back to last place in the AL Central and the pitching improvement they made in the offseason have only marginally improved what was the league’s worst staff last season.

Their best hitter, Joe Mauer, continues to have an underwhelming season. I don’t want to get on a soap box but I think he is the most overrated player of our generation. Dude is 6’5”, 230 and has never hit 30 homers or had 100 RBI…and now he is on the DL.

One of those new pitchers was Phil Hughes, the former Yankee.  As he has in year’s past he is following up a terrible year with a good one.

He has already doubled last year’s win total and we are not even at the All-Star break – and he is posting his best walk rate ever. In one start against his former team he held the Yankees to 2 runs over 8 innings in a victory.

I am sure NY is wishing they still had him this season.

I am not fading Tanaka here but I think the value on the Twins is just too hard to ignore. There is no value on New York in this one and the over seems pretty fair too.

Tanaka was brilliant in his one start against Minnesota but he has generally not been as stingy when teams get to see him for a second time.
