The Yankees opened up their chequebook in the offseason to bring in some new blood after a disappointing 2013 campaign. Jacoby Ellsbury will be the new man in center, Carlos Beltran will man right, with Brian McCann blocking the plate. Kelly Johnson and Brian Roberts will also see time in the infield, with Johnson expected to see a regular role in the infield.

It’s no coincidence that each of those hitters is left-handed, or at least a switch hitter. The Yankees are taking advantage of the wind tunnel and that short porch in right field, so balls should be flying out of the new Yankee Stadium with pretty good regularity.

How much that will help the team in this one is another story, but there’s no question the pinstripes bring more talent to the table than the Astros. For Houston, their most lucrative offseason move was bringing in new ace-by-default Scott Feldman, who will get the nod for the Astros on Tuesday.

The move from the National League to the American League didn’t go all that well for Feldman a year ago. After compiling a 3.46 ERA in 15 starts for the Cubs, Feldman put up a 4.27 ERA in 15 starts for the Orioles.

Interestingly enough, in two starts against the Yankees last year, Feldman was solid, throwing 14 2/3 innings and compiling a 2.45 ERA with a 0.82 WHIP and a .176 BAA. Even still, he was tabbed with an 0-1 record in those games.

Feldman will be opposed by the newly slimmed down C.C. Sabathia. Sabathia showed up in the best shape of his playing career after a real down year in 2013, in which he posted a 4.78 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, lost 13 games, and allowed opposing hitters to post a .272 batting average against him, each the worst marks of his career.

After what felt like years of complacency, a motivated C.C. should strike fear into opposing American League teams. Sabathia hasn’t faced the Astros since a complete game victory back in 2008 when he was with the Brewers, so most of the Astros roster will be getting their first look at the Bay Area native.

The Yankees took five of six from the Astros a year ago, including a three-game sweep in Houston. The Astros caught the Rangers off guard in their opener last year, but the Yankees are aware of that and surely won’t let the same thing happen to them.

The Yankees are 12-1 in the last 13 meetings between these teams.

The play: New York -163
