Two teams that had incredibly different weekends meet inside Progressive Field for the start of a 3 game series on Tuesday night. New York has seem their AL East lead completely diminish following a sweep at the hands of the Toronto Blue Jays at home. The Jays have cut the gap to just 1.5 games. As for the Indians, while they still sit 8 back of a Wild Card spot, their offense absolutely exploded for the first time all season over the weekend and they got a couple of gem pitching performances in their series win over the Twins.

The Yankees will send rookie Luis Severino to the hill in hopes of grabbing his first win. The Indians will counter with Carlos Carrasco, who has been dominant this season.

New York Yankees

Alex Rodriguez said it best following the Yankees getting swept, “good teams punch back.” Well, that is exactly what the Yankees will have to do in their series against the Indians this week.

New York had a comfortable 6 game lead, but the Blue Jays made some moves at the deadline and now have closed the gap to just 1.5 games in the AL East. The Yankees looked like a beaten down team in Sunday’s contest as they struggled.

With that series now out of the way, they’ll send Luis Severino to the hill to try and put the breaks on their losing ways. Severino is just 0-1 with an ERA of 1.80 in 2 starts this season. The rookie struggled with his command last time out against the Red Sox as he needed 94 pitches to get through just 5 innings of work.

He allowed 2 runs (1 earned), but was the tough luck loser as his offense couldn’t produce for him.

The Yankees come into Tuesday’s road contest with a record of 29-28 S.U. away from home. While they average 4.81 runs a game, that has not been the case as of lately.

New York scored just 1 run over the weekend, as they were shut out for the first time in back-to-back games since 1999.

Cleveland Indians

While the Yankees were struggling to manufacture any runs and put together good at bats over the weekend, the Indians were doing just the opposite for the first time all season. After scoring 9 runs in a losing effort on Friday, Cleveland dropped a 17 spot on Saturday, followed by an 8 spot on Sunday.

Cleveland was bashing home runs, hitting with runners in scoring positions, and even a grand slam in Saturday’s outburst.

Cleveland was getting contributions from everyone. Newly acquired OF Abraham Almonte went 4 for 5 with a home run Saturday and followed that up with a 2 run home run on Sunday. Chris Johnson, who was acquired in the Swisher and Bourn deal, went 4 for 4 in his Indians debut on Sunday.

While they still sit 8.0 games off the Wild Card pace and a playoff birth a real long shot, they still have a month and a half to make one last run. With the way their starting pitchers are going, who knows.

Corey Kluber pitched a complete game on Sunday and even had a no hitter going into the 6th. It’s looked like the rotation has fed off one another all season.

It’ll be Carlos Carrasco’s turn to try and follow up Kluber’s performance. Carrasco has done just that in his last 2 starts as he’s allowed just 1 run in 18 innings of work.

Carrasco has thrown 9 innings in his last 2 starts each, one a complete game against Oakland, and the other an eventual 2-0 Indians 12 inning win.
