New York

UT Daniel Murphy had the big bat hitting two homers for the power starved Mets.

In case you were thinking that it was Matt Harvey that shutout the Nets you would be wrong, it was Jennry Mejia, who has gotten a few opportunities the past couple of seasons but was making his first start of the season.

He has never shown this kind of potential in the Majors and if he is legit the Mets have the making of a nice young staff.

I tend to rag on pitchers like Dillon Gee but he hasn’t been terrible this season. Especially lately as he has not given up any ERs in his last two starts.

Gee never dominates but he has found a way to be an effective MLB pitcher – one who has been especially effective against Washington. Gee is 6-1 against the Nats with a 2.57 ERA and that includes a very strong outing against them in a victory almost a month ago.

His road splits should give you pause but it seems like there is something there.

Washington

After getting hammered in the opener, the Nats were praying to get something out of starter Ross Ohlendorf…and they did.

Ohlendorf matched the Mets Harvey frame for frame allowing the Nats to win it in the ninth on a 3B Ryan Zimmerman walk off homer.

They split the doubleheader despite being outscored by 10 runs and only scoring two themselves. Saturday’s matchup will be an interesting one because they used 7 different pitchers over the two games yesterday. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Its possible they might be turning to some tired or unexpected guys in important situations.

When Washington acquired Dan Haren the thought was that he would really lengthen their rotation but it hasn’t worked out that way.

If things hold, this would mark the thirst straight season his ERA has jumped significantly and you have to wonder about his ability because he is quite simply being hit and hard – his BAA and homers allowed are at career highs or on pace to eclipse them.

The Mets hardly have a fearsome lineup but this year that is seemingly not mattering to Washington opponents.

Washington is the superior team but I like the Mets in this spot.

They are feisty and have nothing to lose so they can go all out after a day night double-header yesterday. I wouldn’t have thought to be writing this at the start of the season but Gee is way more reliable than Haren right now.

Everyone is hitting him and I don’t think the Mets will be the exception. I didn’t include it above but the Nats have lost Haren’s last 11 starts.

O/U Pick: Over
Score Prediction: New York 5 – Washington 4
