MLB Betting – Mets, Cards kick off weekend stint in St. Louis

MLB betting players will be watching two teams that have gotten off to opposite starts to the season on Friday, as the struggling New York Mets will visit the St. Louis Cardinals, who had won six of their first eight to start the campaign. It doesn’t look good for the Mets either, with one of the best pitchers on the mound for the Cardinals.

Mets vs Cardinals odds – Friday, April 16, 8:15 PM ET

Oliver Perez (0-1, 6.35) was roughed up in his first start of the season, allowing four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings, along with six strikeouts and four walks in a 4-3 loss to Washington at home. Perez is trying to bounce back from an injury-riddled 2009 in which he made just 14 starts, and he’s facing a team that has rocked him in the past as the 28-year-old southpaw is 2-5 in 13 career starts against the Cardinals with a 4.84 ERA, and it’s even worse at Busch Stadium, where he is 0-1 in two starts with a 8.38 ERA, and the Cardinals hit .372 off of him at home. That’s not good news if you were planning on making a sportsbetting pick with the Mets on Friday.

Chris Carpenter (1-0. 5.73) definitely didn’t have his best stuff in an 8-7 loss in Milwaukee, earning a no-decision by allowing seven runs (five earned) on seven hits over 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and a pair of walks, and strangely, he gave up three home runs. The Mets have had Carpenter’s number in his career as he is 1-4 in five starts with a 4.80 ERA, but he’ll be making his first home start of the season, and the 34-year-old righthander was a beast at Busch Stadium in 2009, going 8-2 in 12 starts with a 2.49 ERA.

MLB odds should favor the Cardinals at home, where they have won their first two games of the year. These two have split their last 10 meetings, while the Mets were swept in three games in their lone trip to St. Louis last year. Albert Pujols is off to a flying start as he is in search of his fourth MVP award with five homers and 15 RBIs, which leads the National League in both categories, and he has 19 dingers and 58 RBis in 59 games against the Mets in his career, hitting for an average of .327. Carpenter usually follows up his bad outings with a good one, and he’s facing a New York club who is 12th in the National League in average.
