Odds to Win MLB’s National League West

In one of the better division pennant races from last season, the Dodgers outlasted the Diamondbacks to win the NL West by 2 games. With Manny Ramirez aboard for the whole season, LA should be able to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the division.

Something tells me this isn’t going to be the case, as the NL West could be more competitive this season than most people think.

Arizona Diamondbacks +140: With two of the most solid pitchers (Brandon Webb and Dan Haren) in the league they will win their share of games. There big question mark is can their hitting win some games as well. They will need some relatively unknown players to step up and if they can they will be in the hunt right until the end.

Colorado Rockies +750: Losing Matt Holiday creates a hole in their offense, but there is enough of a nucleus of solid players that will keep them competitive, possibly enough to play the role of spoiler. Keep an eye on this team as they will be better than most people expect.

Los Angeles Dodgers +150: Adding Manny put this team over the top last season, and could very well do the same this year, as long as he stays happy. Their starting rotation will have a new look and possibly some question marks as well. With all the talent this team has, LA should win this division. I’m just not convinced they will.

San Diego Padres +1200: This team lost close to 100 games last season (99) and has done little in the off season to make me think they won’t reach that dubious distinction in 2009. They have a few talented players, but collectively they will just not be competitive.

San Francisco Giants +450: Their pitching staff is the strength of this team, and we all know that pitching wins games. If they can get some better production from their bats there is no reason they can’t be right in the thick of things. With Barry Bonds a distant memory, I look for the Giants to be a .500 or better ball club in 2009.

This pennant race will once again come down to the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks, although I’m not counting out Colorado to be in the mix as well.

NL West Prediction:

I like Arizona in a one game playoff against the Dodgers to win the NL West.
