MLB Betting – Twins, Tigers square off in Motown

If you’re checking out past Kentucky Derby winners, you know the value of a good thoroughbred. We’ll see a couple of thoroughbreds, in a baseball sense, on Tuesday when the top two teams in the American League Central, Detroit and Minnesota, go head to head.

Twins vs Tigers odds – Tuesday, April 27, 7:05 PM ET

The Twins will go with Francisco Liriano (2-0. 1.29), who extended his streak of scoreless innings to 15 by shutting Cleveland out over eight innings of a 6-0 win at home, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks. Liriano now leads the American League in ERA, and the 26-year-old southpaw is looking more like the player who went 12-3 in 2006, not the guy who has battled injuries and inconsistency over the last couple of years.

Liriano is 3-1 in 11 appearances, including seven starts, against the Lions with a 4.56 ERA, but the Tigers are only hitting .245 off him. Liriano is like baseball’s version of the Spurs’ NBA championship odds: everyone counted him out, but he looks to be back and ready to fire the Twins to another Central crown.

The Tigers will counter with Justin Verlander (1-1, 6.95), who has been all over the place to begin the season, and he earned his first victory of the year in a 5-4 win on the road against the Angels despite an indifferent outing. Verlander gave up four runs on six hits over five innings, needing 125 pitches to get that far, and he had the same amount of walks as he had strikeouts (four).

This doesn’t seem to be a matter of a pitcher who received a big-money extension in the offseason, and he’s just going at half-speed. In fact, Verlander may be putting too much pressure on himself to live up to the contract.

In 14 career outings against the Twins, Verlander is 5-6 with a 4.28 ERA.

MLB odds should favor the Tigers at home, and the Twins have dropped six of their last 10 trips to Detroit.

However, the Tigers may be at a disadvantage because they play in Texas on Monday night, and then have to travel back home. The Twins had a day off after a weekend set in Kansas City, which is a much shorter difference to travel.

We’re betting on Verlander to come out of his funk, but how will the Tigers’ position player feel after their flight? Liriano has been lights out this year, and a tired team isn’t what you want to have to combat him.

In what should be a low-scoring pitcher’s duel, we’re going with Liriano and the Twins in our sports betting book.
