With the trade deadline over and done with, both sides will now shift their focus to battling it out for the N.L. Central crown the rest of the way. The Brewers hold a slight edge at the moment, but the Cardinals will be looking to change that in their home ballpark.

The Cardinals made some big moves near the trade deadline, including acquiring starting pitchers John Lackey and Justin Masterson, though they will have to wait to see what kind of contributions they’ll get from those players.

As for the Brewers, they’ll likely have Gerardo Parra available for Friday’s contest. Parra was acquired in advance of Thursday’s deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks for a pair of minor leaguers. The team would surely love to have him in the lineup for this contest as he is hitting .429 against right-handed hitters since July 23.

The team can use all the help it can get facing Adam Wainwright, who is coming off a dazzling effort against the Chicago Cubs. In that outing, a 1-0 Cardinals win, Wainwright gave up five hits in seven innings of work, getting out of multiple jams to hold the Cubs scoreless. Wainwright is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his last four starts against the Brewers.

The Brewers counter with Wily Peralta to halt a stretch in which they have lost nine of their last 12 games. Peralta has been hot, going 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA over his last three starts. Peralta has a 1.96 ERA in his last three outings against the Cardinals, though he is 0-2 with a 6.94 ERA in his only two starts in St. Louis.

Wainwright has been brilliant for the Cardinals this season, and he’s got the best of both Peralta and the Brewers in the past, making the line in this one seem quite reasonable. The Cardinals know the clock is ticking on the N.L. Central race, and they must understand that they need to take this series on their home turf.

With that said, Peralta has picked his game up of late, and the Cardinals did send some good hitters away in acquiring pitching depth at the trade deadline, so we could see a low-scoring contest in this one.

The Cardinals are 22-7 in Wainwright’s last 29 starts against National League Central opponents, and they are 4-0 in Wainwright’s last four starts against the Brewers.

The under is 12-3-1 in the Cardinals’ last 16 games when playing the opener of a series, and it is 12-4-2 in the Cardinals’ last 18 home games against a right-handed starter.

The play: St. Louis -156, Under 7
