Total: Over/Under 9

The New York Mets return to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for a three game weekend series with the Phillies. Game 1 scheduled for a 7:35 P.M start tonight.

After losing six out of its last 10, New York finds itself at 54-54, 7 ½ games behind Atlanta in the NL East, and fading fast in the playoff race. The Mets are 21-35 SU on the road and 26-34 ATS as an underdog. Against the over/under line they are 48-56-4 and the total has stayed under in 14 of their last 18 games against Philadelphia.

Jon Niese gets the start tonight for New York. The left hander is 7-5 on the year with an ERA of 3.78 in 19 starts this year. In his last game he only lasted 4.1 innings after giving up seven hits and six earned runs in a loss to Arizona. Niese is 1-0 with a 1.29 in his career against Philadelphia.

The Mets bats have only been able to average 3.8 runs per game over their last 10. Overall, they have a team batting average of .251 and have scored 457 runs, both ranked 13th in the NL. David Wright leads the team with 118 hits, 77 RBI, and 17 home runs.

Philadelphia continues to keep the pressure on the Braves, remaining just two games back. The Phillies have won eight out of their last 10 games and four straight. They are now 60-48 overall and 34-18 at home. As the favorite, Philadelphia is 43-33 ATS and 51-54-2 against the over/under line.

On the mound tonight for Philadelphia is right hander Joe Blanton. In 17 previous starts this season he is 4-6 with a 5.86 ERA. In his last outing he gave up nine hits and four earned runs in six innings of work against the Nationals. Lifetime against New York, Blanton is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA.

Despite having several key players on the DL including their team leader in RBI and home runs, Ryan Howard, the Phillies continue to find a way to score enough runs to keep winning. They have a team batting average of .260, ranking them seventh in the NL and 511 runs scored, an average of 4.73 per game, ranking them fourth.

The Mets are 2-9 SU in their last 10 games against Philadelphia on the road and the Phillies are 12-2 SU in their last 14 games. Neither starting pitcher is going to strike fear in the eyes of the opposing team’s lineup. Given their past tendencies, there could be quite a few runs scored early in the game putting this game in the hands of the bullpen.

Stick with the Phillies in Game 1 as they find a way to squeeze out another late inning victory.
