Seattle continues to hang tough in the AL West race with a 4-2 record in its last six games by virtue of series wins over San Diego and Oakland. The Mariners came into this series trailing Texas by 3.5 games with an overall record of 43-44. They are 25-23 at home this season, but just 18-21 on the road.

Hitting has definitely not been Seattle’s strong suit this season as it is ranked last in the AL with a dismal .224 team batting average and last in runs scored with 292. Fortunately, its pitching has been lights out with a team ERA of 3.11. Rookie right hander Blake Beavan will be making his second MLB start on Friday. He looked sharp in his debut; holding the Padres to one run on three hits in seven innings of work.

Los Angeles has also played above expectations so far and finds itself just one game in back of the Rangers after winning seven of its last 10. The Angels are 46-42 heading into Thursday’s Game 1 against Seattle. They are 24-20 on the road and an even 22-22 at home.

LA’s lineup has done somewhat of a better job of knocking the ball around with a .255 team batting average, but it has also had to rely heavily on its pitching staff to keep it competitive this season. The Angels are ranked right behind Seattle in the AL with a team ERA of 3.30. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Ervin Santana is slated to get the start for Los Angeles in this one. He is 4-8 this season in 18 starts with an ERA of 3.89, but coming off a win over the Dodgers last Sunday. He held the crosstown rivals to just one earned run on six hits in 7.2 innings. He is 9-5 lifetime against Seattle with a 3.83 ERA.

Head-to-head, the Mariners are 3-2 this season in the friendly confines of Safeco Field. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the five games.

This time around expect another low-scoring affair with Santana outdueling the rookie to lead the Angels to the win.
