Angels vs Mariners Baseball Picks

After a dreadful start to the season the Angels got back on track by taking 3 of 4 against Houston. The problem is that poor start was against these same Mariners and now they are on the road against the Ms.

Los Angeles

Expectations are high for the Angels this season with an expected rebound from the big bats in their lineup. Josh Hamilton has answered the bell, batting .500 with a couple of homers. Most of that damage was done against Houston though, which in many ways is a AAA team.

Lefty Hector Santiago was acquired from Chicago in the offseason and did not make a great first impression last week. He needs to pitch better and he needs to pitch deeper into games because the Angels bullpen has not been super sharp even though it was reinforced in the offseason.

The Angels closer, Ernesto Frieri is especially not looking very sharp in the early going.

Seattle

The Mariners are struggling with injuries in the rotation but they still got off to a good start. It has been imperative too because they are playing 9 straight division games off the hop so a poor start would have really put them behind the 8 ball.

Free agent acquisition Robinson Cano may find it difficult to go yard but as long as he keeps hitting at a high average the Ms should get their money’s worth. He is the only regular batting over .300 right now but Seattle has been able to average better than 5 runs per game.

James Paxton and Taijuan Walker are the future of the Mariners staff. Walker started the season on the DL but Paxton was superb building what we saw in a limited sample size last year. Paxton is a big lefty from BC who is practically playing in his own backyard.

He has swing and miss stuff and the Angels missed a lot as he gave up only two hits while striking out 9 against them last week. That included punching out Josh Hamilton a number of times.

I am banking on the fact that the Angels will not do much better against Paxton than they did last week. The lefty has awesome potential and pitching in his first start at home should have plenty of juice to get them the victory.

In the same vein I am expecting that Santiago will be hit hard again.

I have never been a fan and facing him so soon again should have the Mariners hitters feeling pretty good.

O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Seattle 4 – Los Angeles 2
