The Mets dropped two straight in the Bronx, but are still clinging onto second place in the National League East.

It wasn’t as bad as it sounds though, as they lost both of those games by just a single run.

Now they will try to rebound in Chicago, sending Johan Santana to the hill to face a Cubs lineup that have been hitting poorly, especially against left-handers.

Santana is having a solid year, and after a couple of wobbly outings followed his no-hitter, allowed just four hits and two walks in six innings of Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Baltimore.

He had permitted 10 runs in 10 innings in between.

Meanwhile, the Cubs return home after finishing with four hits in Sunday’s 5-1 loss at Arizona, its fourth straight loss and 16th in 22 games this month. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The offense has been dreadful during the teams current losing streak, scoring one run or zero three times and going 3 for 32 (.094) with runners in scoring position.

In an effort to keep the Mets from piling up too many runs to keep up with, the Cubs will counter Santana by handing the ball to lefty Travis Wood, who gave up a run, four hits and four walks in six innings of Tuesday’s 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.

In spite of his lengthy winless drought, Wood has pitched well lately, posting a 2.92 ERA in his four starts this month.

New York went 2-4 against the Cubs last season and has lost eight of 11 on Chicago’s North Side since 2008.

Matt’s Free Prediction: New York- I’m backing the visitors here. Wood may be capable, but Santana is the better pitcher. The only question mark is whether the streaky Mets can get pull it all together after leaving New York late Sunday night. Nevertheless, the Cubs suck, especially against lefties.
