New York Mets vs. San Diego Padres Preview

1. The Mets snapped their 2-game losing streak in their last game.
2. The Padres are 4-1 in their last 5 home games against the Mets.
3. The Padres rank 8th in the Majors in runs scored.

This season the Padres are 13-14 at home and the Mets are 7-15 on the road.

In their last games the Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-1 and the Mets beat the Miami Marlins 4-3.

Both of these teams are coming off a win and are 5-5 in their last 10 games and in sunny San Diego the Padres are the slight home betting favorite. They sit in 3rd place in the NL West 5.5 games back of the Dodgers and the Mets are in 2nd place in the NL East only ? game back of the Nationals.

Andrew Cashner goes for the Padres tonight and while he has a solid ERA he has some of the worst run support in the NL. However, in his last outing he got 5 runs of support and got the win in a 5-4 win over the L.A. Angels. Before that outing he had gotten 3 runs of support in his previous 6 starts, which were all San Diego losses.

The Padres are 0-4 in Cashner’s last 4 home starts and only 1 win in their last 7 with him on the hill overall, but it was in his last outing.

Since Petco Park opened in 2004 the Mets have only won 1 series. In their last 5 games in San Diego they have 1 win and in this span have combined to score 11 runs and only hit .182 as a team.

The Mets only rank 25th in the Majors in runs scored, but their pitching has been solid ranking 5th in team ERA.

Jacob deGrom goes for the Mets tonight and in his last start he gave up 2 earned runs in 7 innings in a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets have won their last 3 games when he has gotten the starting nod. The New York offense has given him 19 runs of support in his last 3 starts, but he has also been solid on the mound in that span only allowing 3 earned runs and striking out 26 batters over 21 innings of work.

Tonight will be deGrom’s first career start against the Padres.

The Mets are 2-5 in deGrom’s last 7 road starts.

I think Cashner will have another good outing tonight and get a little support, as that is all he will need and San Diego will take the first game of this series.
