Matchup | Preview

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to defy the odds by having the best record in baseball so far in 2012. Matt Kemp’s injury definitely hurts the team’s offense, but the pitching staff continues to dominate. Last year’s National League CY Young Clayton Kershaw will be on the hill in this one.

Seattle counters with an underrated lefty in Jason Vargas. Let’s take a look at this Interleague matchup.

Kershaw won the CY Young going away last year, but he hasn’t been quite so dominating this year. His numbers are still very solid, but they aren’t quite as gaudy as his 2011 numbers. Kershaw’s strikeout numbers are down, and he has been laboring through innings more often this season.

Still, he has a very impressive 2.55 ERA so far this season. The Dodgers just came off an impressive four-game sweep at Philadelphia. Andre Ethier is having a breakout season as far as his power numbers, and A.J. Ellis has been a very pleasant surprise at catcher for the Dodgers.

Bobby Abreu seems to have found new life since coming over to the team, and he has helped the lineup quite a bit.

Seattle has to be glad to be back at home.

The Mariners have already played 37 games away from home compared to just 23 home games. Seattle’s much-maligned offense has scored eight runs or more in 5 of their last 9 games! That includes their 21 run output in Texas last week. Seattle took two of three against the Angels earlier this week.

Kyle Seager looks like a future star, and Justin Smoak is starting to hit for power like the team expected. Jason Vargas is 7-4 with a solid 3.64 ERA in 2012. Vargas has a tremendous 1.91 ERA at home.

Both of these left-handers are tough to score on, and I expect runs to be tough to come by in this matchup. Expect both starters to fare well in this one.
