Los Angeles

Last season’s trades and offseason upgrades were supposed to launch the Dodgers to the top of the N.L. West standings if not higher this year but right now they are looking up at a trio of teams.

They won the opening game of the series against the somewhat surprising New York Mets last night and will look to continue the streak tonight.

Dodgers starter Ted Lilly has probably been underappreciated throughout his career. Still the Dodgers were hoping not to need much from the veteran lefty but with injuries to Zach Greinke, Chad Billingsley and Chris Capuano they needed somebody to throw out there.

Lilly opened the season on the disabled list and this is his first start of the season. On the road and maybe in the cold is not a great situation.

New York

New York dropped the series opener and now sits at .500 and in second in the N.L. East. The record and position are still surprises as this team other than a few players lacks the talent to compete – which will probably be proven over the long haul. I am a huge fan of Joe Peta and his concept of cluster luck.

I think the Mets are a beneficiary of that as they are 4th in runs while being in the lower third in hits this season. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Mets starter Matt Harvey has electric stuff, that is nothing new.

He dazzled a little bit last year and many were excited about the prospect of him being in the Majors for a full season. To this point he has been even better than could have been expected. He has jumped out to a perfect 4-0 record and has yet to given up more than a run in any of his starts.

Even giving up hits has been rare with just 10 allowed in 29 innings. He has become must watch TV.

This will be Harvey’s worst start of the season but it is all relative. By the time he leaves in the 7th the game will be salted away. Odds are Lilly will put up respectable numbers if given a chance but I don’t expect him to come roaring out of the gate.

The Dodgers offense is not totally lame but they will discover what others already know about Harvey.
