MLB Matchup Stats | MLB ATS Insider Preview

The Cardinals enter in poor form, having lost four of their last five games, while the Royals haven’t been any better of late, dropping six of their last eight games.

Both teams have had trouble limiting opponents from scoring runs of late. The Cardinals have allowed 6.0 runs per game over their last five, while the Royals have surrendered 6.3 runs per game over their last seven contests.

The Cardinals hope that struggling starter Shelby Miller can turn things around, both for them, and for himself. Miller was a world-beater for the team last season, but he hasn’t been nearly as effective this season, and in particular over his last two starts.

Miller gave up four runs on in five innings in a loss to Cincinnati a couple of starts ago, halting a personal five-game winning streak. His last start was even worse, as he allowed seven runs over five innings in a loss to the Yankees, striking out only one batter in that outing.

His decreased strikeout rate and increasing walk total can be pointed to for his step back in effectiveness, but even prior to those last two tough outings, Miller had earned the win in six of seven starts, so a bounce back seems to be in order.

The Royals counter with Danny Duffy, who has been the victim of some bad luck this season. He had been pitching very well for the Royals while getting little in the way of run support, but he has only himself to blame for his last two losses.

Duffy surrendered 10 runs in 10 innings in his last two outings, walking seven batters while striking out five, giving up 16 hits and four home runs along the way.

The battle of Missouri belongs to the Cardinals who have wins in six of the last seven meetings. Miller hasn’t been bringing his A-stuff to the mound this season, but he’s still been finding ways to get wins.

Additionally, runs haven’t been all that hard to come by in the last couple outings for either of these starting pitchers. Even still, the total is set as if the oddsmakers are expecting a pitchers’ duel in this one, offering some value on the over.

The Royals are 1-6 in their last seven games against N.L. Central opponents, while the Cardinals are 7-1 in their last eight games against teams with a losing record.

The over is 3-0-1 in the Royals’ last four series openers, and it is 4-1 in the Cardinals’ last five home games.

The play: St. Louis -140, Over 7.5
