The Royals re in a funk. They have lost 5 in a row including last night against San Diego when they blew a 3-0 lead against one of the worst hitting clubs in the Majors. Doubling the agony was losing in extrainnings after having the lead.

Kansas City

They need to right the ship soon because it won’t be any easier going up to Seattle after San Diego.

For a team that was supposed to take yet another step this season they have not gotten off to a very good start.

They are below .500 in a surprisingly tight AL Central.

The Royals have come to rely on the consistency of Jeremy Guthrie. Throughout his career he has been consistently average and this year is no different with an ERA of 4.50 and a 2-2 record. It is nothing new but Guthrie has little margin for error because he does not miss many bats.

Still it is hard to be too critical of someone who gives you team 6IP every time out and has yet to give up more than 4ER in any start this season.

San Diego

The Padres are hoping last night’s come from behind victory can build some momentum.

They have won back to back games and with the Royals in town for a couple more there is no reason they can’t put together a bit of a run.

Yesterday’s 6 runs was an explosion of offense for MLB’s lowest scoring club and they are going to need a strong effort Tuesday from their starter after using 7 pitchers in relief to get the victory.

If San Diego is going to be a surprise team this season they have to start scoring some runs.

Robbie Erlin may not look like much but all throughout his minor league career he put up some dominating strikeout numbers. Despite being able to blow it by hitters he has always been more hittable than you would think. He is a terrible 1-4 to start the season with a 5.83 ERA.

The only positive is that he has dropped his walk and homer rates.

His ERs have spiked because of an inability to strand runners once they are on base – only 50%

I know that Petco suppresses offense but this total is a little low considering who is on the bump for this one. I am not expecting a Rockies game to burst out but I think these teams can put together enough offense to bust the total.

I know it is not like me to put that much faith in the league’s worst offense but I feel better about that than predicting the winner.

Total prediction: Over
Score prediction: San Diego 5 – Kansas City 3
