Minnesota Twins (32-41 through June 23)
Francisco Liriano (4-6, 4.59)

After opening the year buried in the bottom of the MLB overall standings, they went 15-2 over a 17-game stretch to make themselves relevant again.

How are the Twinkies doing it? Pitching, mainly. Justin Morneau remains on the DL and Joe Mauer just returned. But the likes of Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn and even Carl Pavano have gotten the job done on the mound time and time again of late. Is there a staff in the game with better collective control?

Hmm, well, maybe, since the Twinkies still have to count Francisco Liriano. He’s been wild this season, walking 37 batters to accompany his 58 strikeouts. Liriano does seem to be heating up, however. He’s allowed three earned runs or fewer in five straight starts.

Milwaukee Brewers (41-35 through June 23)
Yovani Gallardo (8-4, 4.11)

Hmm. Just when the Brewers were emerging as the class of the National League Central, they hit a rough patch and lost seven of 10. The bats have more or less remained prominent, as Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder are posting their usual prolific power numbers, but the Brewers’ pitching has been spotty of late. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Shaun Marcum has been the team’s best pitcher by far but is batting a hip injury. Zack Greinke is striking out tons of batters but has been unlucky. And what about Yovani Gallardo, who starts Saturday against Minnesota? He was dominant in May and early June, winning six straight starts, but he’s been rocked in two of his last three outings.

MLB Trends:

MIN are 15-5 in their last 20 overall.
MIN are 15-5 in their last 20 games on grass.
Under is 7-3 in MIN last 10 on grass.
Over is 7-3 in MIL last 10 on grass.
Over is 7-3 in MIL last 10 overall.
MIL are 37-17 in their last 54 home games.

The pick:

Could we see a slugfest on Saturday? Miller Park has played as the majors’ top offensive enhancer this season. Then again, Gallardo is 5-1 over eight starts at home this year. Liriano has also been far, far better on the road than at home, posting a 2.74 road ERA compared to 7.62 at Target Field.

In other words, both hurlers will be pitching where they’re most comfortable on Saturday. I’ll give Gallardo the benefit of the doubt since he has the better, healthier lineup behind him and since his last two starts were on the road.

Twins vs Brewers prediction: Brewers 4, Twins 3
