Cleveland Indians (40-33)
Carlos Carrasco (7-3, 3.87)

They just weren’t good enough on paper to be wire-to-wire winners of the American League Central. But I give the plucky group credit for lasting on top far longer than I thought they would. We’re almost halfway through 2011 and the Tribe has a one-game lead over Detroit for first place.

The Indians have won four of six, showing they still have some fight left, but their offense is really drying up. Asdrubal Cabrera has been the team’s best hitter but has no homers and one RBI in his last 15 games. Of the qualifiers, only two Cleveland regulars are batting above .245.

Carlos Carrasco continues to be a pleasant surprise. He’s won three straight starts, allowing just one run over that span. He’s also a road warrior, going 4-0 with a 2.88 ERA in seven tries away from Progressive Field.

San Francisco Giants (40-34)
Jonathan Sanchez (4-5, 3.71)

Whenever the defending champion San Francisco Giants struggle, we know precisely why. They’re a top-five team in every major pitching category but they have the second-worst offense in the league. During their recent five-game losing streak, the Giants scored two runs or fewer every game. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Injuries are obviously to blame, as the Giants are without Buster Posey, Freddy Sanchez, Brandon Belt, Mike Fontenot and Mark DeRosa. But someone has to step up in their absence. Aubrey Huff is batting just .245. Pablo Sandoval is hitting .206 with no homers and one RBI in eight games since returning from his own DL stint.

Jonathan Sanchez will keep on keepin’ on. He rarely lasts past the sixth inning, throws a ton of pitches, walks a ton, strikes out a ton, and usually gives his team a decent chance to win.

MLB Trends:

CLE are 8-2 in their last 10 interleague games.
Over is 11-3 in CLE last 14 Fri. games.
CLE are 7-15 in their last 22 games on grass.
Under is 9-2-1 in SF last 12 interleague games.
Under is 19-7 in SF last 26 home games.
Under is 36-16-2 in SF last 54 on grass.

The pick:

I can’t justify picking San Fran right now – especially since its lineup will face a guy who hasn’t lost on the road in seven starts this season. Sanchez isn’t the easiest pitcher to solve but the Indians are a pretty patient team who will force him to put the ball over the plate. I like them in a minor road upset.

Indians vs Giants prediction: Indians 4, Giants 2
