Milwaukee

The loss sunk the Brewers to last place in the division and appears to be another example of their snake bit season.

Normally if you crank out 10 hits you have more than 3 runs to show for it but with OF Ryan Braun and 3B Corey Hart out of the lineup they are just not able to score runs like they did a few seasons ago (with Prince Fielder too).

It seems like a lot of teams are being forced to give some new guys a chance which is what the Brewers are doing with Saturday starter Donovan Hand. Hand has been very effective in this his rookie season but has made just one start previously where he pitched very effectively, but for just 4 innings. Now he is facing one of the hottest teams in all of baseball so it will be a great challenge.

I would like it better if he was more stretched out but after that spot start he went right back to the bullpen.

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh just keeps on rolling and is looking more and more like a bonafide contender. Yesterday they got down early with a rookie on the mound but Cole regained his composure and his offense got going and then some, scoring 10 to win easily. 3B Pedro Alvarez is on a tear having raised his average consistently over the last month. He leads the team in homers and RBI and has really helped lengthen that lineup. This team is brimming with confidence right now and for good reason.

It seems like the Pirates began to really take off once Francisco Liriano joined the team after starting the season the disabled list. He has made 9 starts since then and both he and the team are 6-3 in those games. His ERA is a scant 2.30 and he has shown the kind of life on his pitches that reminds us of his promise with Minnesota.

Like A.J. Burnett he also gives the Bucs a veteran presence on a team of players experiencing success for the very first time. His second start of the season was against Milwaukee and it was a good one: 5.2, 1ER in a victory.

Not a ton of value on the Pittsburgh side unfortunately. The Brewers might get some more quality innings out of Hand but likely not enough to put a real threat into the red hot Pirates unless the bats really come alive. Pittsburgh has everything cooking right now which is why the value has been completely sucked out of this one.

You could go over though as Bucs lineup seems to be heating up.

O/U Pick: Under
Score Prediction: Pittsburgh 5 – Milwaukee 2
