The Phillies and Nationals play the second game of their season opening three game series tonight at Nationals Park with the first pitch slated for 7:05 P.M.

Philadelphia’s new ace Roy Halladay looked extremely impressive in the Phillies 11-1 opening day win over Nationals on Monday afternoon, but all eyes tonight will be focused on the performance of their former ace Cole Hamels. In 2008 Hamels was one of the primary reasons Philadelphia won their first World Series in close to thirty years.

Last season was a different story as he struggled to a 10-11 record and an overall ERA of 4.32. After rededicating himself this past offseason to becoming the pitcher he was in ’08, expectations are high going into this season.

Hammels debut should be a successful one as he has a lifetime 2.30 ERA with a 7-3 record against the Nationals. Even if he gets knocked around a bit in this one, the run support from the offense should be there. In the opener, Ryan Howard looked to be in mid-season form with a two run blast in the fourth inning to open up a 2-1 lead. Even more impressive was their new 3B, Plocido Polanco’s grand slam homer and a career high six RBI’s in his debut.

While National’s opening day pitcher, John Lannan got rocked by the Phillies powerful lineup, they are hoping that Jason Marquis has better luck in tonight’s game. Acquired as a free agent in the offseason, Marquis was an All Star last season and has had successful stints with St. Louis, Chicago (Cubs), and Colorado in his 10 seasons in the Majors.

Against the Phillies, he has lifetime ERA of 4.38 and an overall record of 5-3. No matter how good he looks, Washington’s bats are going have to provide more than one run if they are to have any hope at tying the series at one game apiece. In the opener, Ryan Zimmerman got them off to a great start with an RBI double in the first inning, but that was all the offense they could produce.

They will need to get some additional production from players like Adam Kennedy, Ivan Rodriguez, and Ian Desmond to have a chance in this one.

While it only the second game of a very long season, the pressure will be on Hamels to show that 2009 was just an aberration and that 2008 was not just a fluke.

Opening up his 2010 season against the Nationals should allow him to have a strong outing that will help build his confidence as the season progresses.
