The Braves and the Phillies play the first of a three game weekend series tonight at Citizens Bank Park with the first pitch slated for 7:05 P.M.

Heading into this season many people believed that Atlanta would have the best chance of any team in the NL East to unseat Philadelphia in the division. While that may still prove to be the case, after a 12-16 start they find themselves in last place, five games out of first.

After enduring a rare 10 game losing streak they head into this game winning four out of their last six.

The Braves will send Derek Lowe to the mound tonight to open the series. So far this year Lowe has a 4-2 record with a 5.18 ERA. His past performance against the Phils has been impressive with a record of 6-2 and an ERA of just 2.73, showing the ability to keep their biggest bats in check.

While their pitching has been average, ranking seventh in the NL with a team ERA of 4.06, hitting has been the real crux of the problem so far as their team batting average is a woeful .236, ranking them near the bottom of the league. The main bright spot in the lineup has been the play of rookie outfielder Jason Heyward.

In his first 28 Major League games he has lit things up with 26 RBI’s on 25 hits and eight homeruns. Unfortunately he may be out of the lineup for this game with a groin strain.

The Phillies have started the month of May like they started the season; on fire. So far they outscored the Mets 21-5 in two lopsided victories and took three out of four from the Cardinals raising their record to 17-11.

They now have a two game lead over New York and Washington in the division.

Long time veteran Jamie Moyer will get the start for the Phils. He is 3-2 on the year with an ERA of 5.70. In his best start this season, back on April 22 he held these Braves to just two earned runs on four hits in six innings of work. Lifetime against this team he is 4-5 with a 4.79 ERA.

While the Phillies pitching has been carrying them lately, it is still the formidable batting lineup that is the heart and soul of this team. Their team average is .268, sixth best in the NL. Their real strength has been putting runs on the board as they are ranked fourth in the entire league with 152.

Ryan Howard and Chase Utley have provided the power, combining for 13 homeruns and Jason Werth has put up MVP like numbers so far with a .354 average, 35 hits, and 21 RBI’s.

While Lowe has enjoyed some success against Philadelphia in the past, you have to question whether or not Atlanta‘s offense can provide enough run support to win this game.

Look for the Phils to improve to 6-2 in their current home stand with another win tonight.
