The Mets and the Phillies play the first of a three game weekend series tonight at Citizens Bank Park with the first pitch slated for 7:05 P.M.

New York stumbled out of the gate losing six out of their first eight games.

After taking two out of three from St. Louis last weekend they went on a mini tear winning nine out of their last ten including winning three out of four from Chicago (Cubs) then sweeping Atlanta and Los Angeles (Dodgers) three games each. This run has left them with a record of 13-9, a ½ game in front of Philadelphia in the East.

Jon Niese will get the nod for New York tonight. So far this season he has started four games but only has one decision, a 3-1 loss to the Marlins in his first outing of the season.

In 22 innings of work he has given up 30 hits and nine earned runs for an ERA of .323. He has never faced the Phillies before so it will be interesting to see how he handles their high powered lineup.

The key to the Mets recent turn around can be directly attributed to their bats finally coming to life. In their current seven game winning streak they have averaged five runs a game. David Wright leads the team with 14 RBI’s and three HR’s.

Jeff Francoeur has also helped the turnaround with 22 hits, 12 RBI’s and three HR’s.

Philadelphia’s trip to the West Coast this week did not go as planned. They started by losing two out of three to Arizona over the weekend and then proceeded to lose another two out of three to San Francisco.

Over this six game span their pitching has been shaky at best and their powerful lineup has almost ground to a halt. While it is still only the first month of the season this is unfamiliar territory for this team.

Kyle Kendrick gets his fifth start of the season with less than stellar results. He has yet to pitch long enough to get a decision, giving up 24 hits and 16 earned runs in just 18.2 innings of work. Another poor start tonight will only raise the level of concern as to his future as a starter especially with the expected return of Joe Blanton.

A bright spot for the Phillies pitching staff is the return of closer Brad Lidge from the disabled list.

The one encouraging sign for Philadelphia was 7-6 win over San Francisco in their last game with Giant’s ace Tim Lincecum on the mound. Ryan Howard ended the longest homerun drought of his career, 65 at-bats by going deep on Lincecum for his fourth dinger of the year. He leads the Phillies with 26 hits and 17 RBI’s

With the Phillies out of first place for the first time since May 29th of last season there will be some added motivation to take the first game of this series to reclaim the lead.

While I’m not overly confident with Kendrick on the mound, the Phillies bats will find away to come out on top in this one.
