The Rangers and Athletics meet inside the O.co Coliseum for the first of a three game set Tuesday night. The pair of AL West teams find a lot of room between the two in the standings as Texas sits in 2nd place, just 3 games out, while Oakland sits in last, 11 games off the pace.

Still, it’s early and the Athletics will look to take a step in the right direction with ace and candidate to start the All Star Game next month, Sonny Gray. Opposing him will be the right hander, Nick Martinez, who looks to get back on track after getting rocked in his last start.

Texas Rangers vs. Oakland Athletics

The AL West has been quite the eye opener of a division thus far. Oakland traded away a lot of their veterans as Billy Bean tried to rebuild, while still contend. That hasn’t worked thus far as they find themselves in the cellar of the AL West. Texas, who lost their ace during spring training, has flipped the script on the preseason predictions and finds themselves ahead of both Los Angeles and Seattle, but still 3 games behind the surprising Astros for 1st place.

Texas has the best road record in baseball at 19-12 and will look to Nick Martinez to start this series off on the right foot.

Nick Martinez started the season 4-0 and look as if he would solidify the rights of being the Rangers’ ace. However, his recent struggles have brought him back to reality as he looks to rebound from a disappointing performance last time out.

Martinez allowed 9 hits and 7 runs in just 3.1 innings of work against the White Sox in Texas. He’s lost 2 straight starts, but has seen the Rangers go 4-0 in games he’s started against the AL West.

Martinez will be facing Oakland for the 3rd time this season. He’s 1-0 with a no decision.

For the Athletics, they expect to win every time Sonny Gray toes the rubber. Gray brings in a 7-2 record and an ERA of just 1.65. He’s won his last 3 starts.

Gray pitched an 8 inning, 2 hit no run gem in Detroit en route to an Oakland 6-1 win last time out.

Gray has faced Texas one time this season and went 6.2 innings allowing just 2 hits and 0 runs.

Oakland has been a mess at home though this season as they are just 9-17 S.U.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Rangers are 17-5 in their last 22 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
  • Rangers are 12-4 in their last 16 games as an underdog.
  • Athletics are 4-9 in their last 13 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
  • Athletics are 6-15 in their last 21 home games.

Free 4* MLB Pick: Under 7

While Gray has been amazing this season, their is simply no value at laying that much juice on a team that has gone 9-17 at home. Martinez needs a bounce back performance and should get one here today.

Oakland 3, Texas 1

Expect a low scoring affair in Oakland.
