The last time Madison Bumgarner took the mound, he turned in one of the most epic post season starts in the history of baseball. Now, he’ll take the mound to open the season as the defending champs begin their defense against Josh Collmenter and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona hopes to avoid the same fortune as 2014 when they battled injuries and struggles for the entire season.

San Francisco Giants

When you’re the defending champion, there’s always going to be a target on your back. The Giants get set to defend their 2014 World Series Title as they send Madison Bumgarner to the mound. Bumgarner had an abysmal spring going 0-3 with a near 5.00 ERA, but those stats mean nothing to the tall lefty.

2014 World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner looks to repeat his post season performance that saw him go 4-1 overall, and 2-0 with an epic save in game 7 of the World Series.

San Francisco will be without their everyday right fielder for at least another couple weeks, as Hunter Pence continues his journey back from a broken arm.

The lineup will also have to adjust to life after Pablo Sandoval. After his departure to Boston, San Francisco replaced him with Casey McGehee. San Fran will also have another new face in their outfield as Nori Aoki will be in the lineup this season for the Giants. Aoki was signed after his solid tenure in Kansas City in 2014.

Giants’ starter Madison Bumgarner is 6-4 with a 2.70 ERA in 18 career games against Arizona.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Dbacks hope that 2015 is just the complete opposite of 2014. The Diamondbacks finished dead last in the majors in 2014 with a 64-98 record. Arizona dealt with many injuries to key players, along with a lot of inconsistencies.

The main question mark coming into the season for Arizona is their starting rotation. The staff will feature two pitchers who are still in recovery mode from past Tommy John Surgeries.

Bronson Arroyo and Patrick Corbin will both be out until the middle of the season as they continue their rehab stints.

With those two down, the Diamondbacks will look to a young, inexperienced rotation, leading off with Josh Collmenter. The righty made 28 starts in 2014 and went 11-9 with a 3.46 ERA. This spring, Collmenter solidified his number 1 spot in the rotation with 13 scoreless innings in 3 game starts.

Josh Collmenter brings in a career 3.17 ERA with a 5-2 record against the Giants.

Betting Trends:

  • Giants are 14-5 in their last 19 games on grass.
  • Giants are 19-7 in their last 26 games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
  • Diamondbacks are 16-37 in their last 53 games on grass.
  • Diamondbacks are 15-36 in their last 51 games as an underdog.

Free 4* MLB Pick: San Francisco -138

Even with Hunter Pence sidelined, this Giants lineup is still really impressive. Bumgarner, a Cy Young candidate for 2015, has no worries about his poor spring performance.

San Francisco 5, Arizona 2

San Francisco spoils opening night in Arizona as they come away with a victory.
