The Marlins and Padres get set to meet up at PETCO Park on Thursday night to begin a 4 game set. San Diego saw their 5 game winning streak come to a screeching halt as they were outscored in San Francisco 16-4 in a 2 game set.

The Marlins have really tapered off as they sit 15 games below the .500 mark and will likely be sellers come deadline time.

Miami Marlins vs. San Diego Padres

Both teams had high aspirations coming into the 2015 season. Miami was expected to be a dark horse in the National League, while San Diego went out and made move after move as they tried to build a powerhouse of a team. However, both teams have struggled and gone through manager changes as they will both likely be sellers at the deadline.

With many scouts expected to be watching, the Marlins will send out RH Tom Koehler.

Koehler has been one of the Marlins most dependable starters, but only shows a 7-6 record with a respectable ERA of 3.38. He’s lost 2 straight as well as he’s received very little run support from his offense.

In his career against the Padres, the RH is 1-0 with an ERA of 3.38 in 2 career appearances.

As for the Padres, they will likely be without OF Justin Upton once again Upton has been battling an oblique injury and has missed 4 straight. His name has been one of the many Padres players brought up as a possible candidate to move prior to the deadline.

Pitching wise, the Padres will go with Tyson Ross. The RH has won 3 straight decisions and is pitching very well as of late. He got a no decision last time out giving up just 3 runs to the Rockies in 6.2 innings.

In his career against the Marlins, Ross is 1-1 with a high ERA of 6.14.

Both teams are struggling to score runs as of late as they are both averaging under 4 runs.

The Marlins are scoring just 3.68 runs per contest, while the Padres are scoring 3.88.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Marlins are 6-2 in their last 8 games with the total set at 6.5 or lower.
  • Marlins are 17-35 in their last 52 road games.
  • Padres are 27-13 in their last 40 games as a home favorite of -110 to -150.
  • Padres are 7-15 in their last 22 games vs. a right-handed starter.

Free 4* MLB Pick: Miami ML

Both teams really aren’t playing well and the pitching matchup is pretty much the same.

Miami 4, San Diego 3

It doesn’t make much sense to lay juice on a bad team without a player like Upton so backing the road underdog is the way to go here.
