A pair of pitchers that have their teams heavily relying on them take the hill in the opener of a 4 game set on Thursday.

Corey Kluber, for the Indians, opposes James Paxton, of the Mariners, in what expects to be a pitchers’ duel at Safeco Field.

Cleveland managed to salvage a 3 game home set with Texas as they exploded for 12 runs in the finale on Wednesday. Seattle comes in off a sweep of the Tampa Bay Rays and will look to continue to close the gap on first place Houston Astros.

Cleveland Indians

The Indians looked to be turning things around, but ran into a hot Texas Rangers offense and shot themselves in the foot in the first two games of the series. However, for the first time this season, it looked as if the Cleveland Indians got upset with their play and teed off on Wednesday to avoid the sweep.

Everybody in the starting 9 had at least one hit and contributed as the Tribe put up 12 runs in a 12-3 route.

Now, they’ll look to run their streak to two straight with ace Corey Kluber on the hill.

Kluber started the season off rough, but in his last three starts he’s gone 2-0 with a 0.72 ERA. Kluber has his strikeout pitch working as he’s struck out 37 in those 3 starts.

Last time out against the Cincinnati Reds, he allowed 9 hits, but just 1 run in 8.0 innings of work and got the win after Jason Kipnis ripped an RBI double in the bottom of the 8th inning. The plan was to let Kluber go out and finish the game, but some hamstring tightness did not allow him too. He was quick to dismiss any lingering effects and told reporters it was not an issue.

In his career against Seattle, Kluber has gone 1-0 as he pitched a complete game last season in a 2-0 pitchers’ duel win against Felix Hernandez.

Seattle

The Mariners return home following a 9 game road trip that saw them win 5 of their last 6, including a 3 game sweep in Tampa Bay. The road trip was capped off by a complete game shutout thrown by Felix Hernandez.

With the successful trip, Seattle has leaped into 2nd place in the AL West, now 6 games behind 1st place Houston.

In the opener, Seattle will send James Paxton to the mound, a winner in his last 3 starts.

With consecutive wins over San Diego, Boston, and Toronto, Paxton has lowered his ERA to just 3.52, when it was as high as 8.40 this season.

In his last 14 innings at home, Paxton has not allowed a run to be scored on him.

This will be his first start against Cleveland in his career.

Seattle’s offense will likely need to pick it up as they’ve averaged just 3.80 runs a game this season.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Indians are 7-2 in their last 9 games on grass.
  • Indians are 5-2 in their last 7 road games.
  • Mariners are 6-2 in their last 8 home games with the total set at 7.0-8.5.
  • Mariners are 5-2 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series.
