The Battle for the Ohio Cup starts in Cleveland this weekend as the Indians and Reds continue their in state rivalry. Both teams come in at different places at the moment as Cincinnati has dropped 5 in a row, including 2 to Kansas City the past couple days.

Cleveland finished up a 5-2 road trip with a 5-2 victory over the White Sox on Thursday.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds are trying to figure things out as they continue to struggle with runners on base. They endured major problems in their short 2 game series in Kansas City that saw them get outscored 10-1 as they dropped both and ran their losing streak to five. They’ll try to right the ship in Cleveland as they send right hander Mike Leake to the mound.

Mike Leake will look for the bounce back effect as he got rocked in his last outing.

Leake went just 5.0 innings allowing 11 hits and 9 runs in an 11-2 loss to San Francisco. He also allowed 3 home runs in the start.

Mike Leake is 1-0 with a 3.28 ERA in 4 games against Cleveland.

The Reds recent offensive struggles have put them at just 3.85 runs a game this season, among one of the worst in the MLB.

The Ohio Cup is currently in the hands of the Reds as they went 3-1 against Cleveland last season.

Cleveland Indians

The Indians have been searching for a spark this season and this past road trip may be just what they needed. Cleveland took 2 of 3 in Texas and followed that up with 3 of 4 in Chicago behind some of the best starting pitching they’ve seen this season. Carlos Carrasco will look to follow his fellow teammates and continue that trend Friday at Progressive Field.

Carrasco received just 1 run of support last Sunday in the Indians 5-1 loss to Texas. His offense went just 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and never gave him a chance in the game. Carrasco ended up going the distance in the game, but was the tough luck loser.

Carrasco has received a decision in every one of his starts as he is 4-4 with a 4.98 ERA.

He brings in a 1-0 record against the Reds in 2 appearances against them.

The Indians look to stay hot on offense as Jason Kipnis, Michael Brantley, Jose Ramirez, and Mike Aviles are all hitting the ball very well, especially on this past road trip.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

  • Reds are 16-35 in their last 51 road games vs. a right-handed starter.
  • Reds are 18-42 in their last 60 games as a road underdog of +110 to +150.
  • Indians are 5-2 in their last 7 games on grass.
