In a battle between teams wondering if they should sell or stay put at the deadline, the Chicago White Sox went in the right direction on Thursday as they played long ball in an 8-1 route over the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians will look to even things up with ace Corey Kluber on the mound. The White Sox will counter with LH Jose Quintana, who has plenty of experience against the Tribe.

Chicago White Sox vs. Cleveland Indians

Two teams in the bottom of the AL Central have officially turned their attention to the AL Wild Card race as their only hope for postseason contention. The Indians got a rare bad pitching performance as Trevor Bauer was tattooed for 3 long balls in an 8-1 loss. Cleveland’s rotation has typically been the backbone of this team, but that was not the case on Thursday.

The White Sox instead were the beneficiaries of the solid pitching and will send LH Jose Quintana to the hill to try and repeat that performance.

Quintana is winless in his last 3 starts and has a subpar 4-9 record thus far. He’s been solid even though his record does not indicate that as he’s pitched at least 6 innings in 12 of his last 13 starts.

He’s faced Cleveland twice this season. He won on April 14th by not allowing an earned run, but lost to the Tribe on May 19th allowing only 2 runs in 7 innings, but got zero run support.

For Cleveland, they’ll go with Corey Kluber. Klubot as deemed by his teammates has been far been that his 5-10 record indicates as well. He’s pitched like the defending Cy Young award winner many times, but has the worst offensive run support in the league. However, Kluber wasn’t quite sure what to do with himself as the Indians broke things open offensively in his last start against the Reds.

Kluber struck out 12 back in May against the White Sox, but got a ND as his offense failed him again.

He was knocked around on another occasion in Chicago, but his offensive sputtered again and scored him 0 runs.

MLB Handicapping Trends:

Both pitchers tend to have success against the opposition.

Cleveland 2, Chicago 1
