The Cubs and Reds both come in to Friday’s matchup hoping to not let their most recent loss turn into a losing streak. Chicago had a 4-1 lead vanish thanks in large part to their middle relief bullpen struggles. The Reds, couldn’t muster any offense as they fell flat in the finale against Milwaukee 4-2. This will be the 2nd time the two teams have met, as the Cubs took 2 of 3 last time, including a 5-0 shutout in the series finale.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs essentially stole the first 2 games of a four game set against the Pirates, only to have the final two games stolen right from them as they earned a series split in Pittsburgh.

Now they turn their attention to another divisional opponent as they continue their road trip in Cincinnati on Friday.

Seeking his first win after signing his big contract with Chicago, the Cubs send Jon Lester to the mound.

Lester brings in an 0-2 record with a 6.89 ERA and things have not gone well for him early. He did turn in his best start of the season last time out against San Diego as he went 5.1 innings with just 3 runs allowed on 6 hits.

In his other two outings, Lester went 6.0 innings and 4.1 innings allowing a combined 18 hits and 9 runs.

The Cubs will hope Lester can give them some length on Friday as their bullpen is taxed from the series with Pittsburgh.

The youngsters in Kris Bryant and Addison Russell continue to tear up the opposition and lead the charge for the Cubs’ offense.

Cincinnati Reds

The Reds come in off a very encouraging series as they took 3 of 4 from Milwaukee and nearly came away with the 4 game sweep. After taking the first 3, the Reds led 2-1 late, until the Brewers played long ball and eventually took the finale 4-2. Now the Reds shift their focus to another divisional as they begin their series with the Cubs.

The Reds will send Mike Leake to the mound who was the unlucky loser last time out. Leake went 8 innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 runs in a 2-1 tough loss to St. Louis.

He’s faced the Cubs once already, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs over 7 innings. Leake earned a no decision, as the Cubs went on to win 7-6.

Leake will be facing some new faces this time around as he will get his first look at Bryant and Russell.

The Reds will look to get their offensive groove back in the series opener on Friday. After scoring 16 runs in the 2nd game of the series, Cincinnati could only manufacture 2 runs in each of the final 2 games.

The Reds have been causing havoc on the bases as well, going 18 for 19 on the season in attempts.

The lone caught stealing happened Thursday against Milwaukee.
