Both teams look like they are out of the race, especially Boston. It wouldn’t surprise if they shed a little more before first pitch.

Rays

The Rays are only a game below .500 and not much behind Toronto and Baltimore but they have done nothing to fortify the club. They were going to have trouble competing no matter what but after seeing the way Toronto went all in it is hard to see them staying relevant.

Tampa is one of the worst balanced teams in the league. They have very good pitching but the offense is often lame. They have won only four of their last ten and in each loss they have failed to score more than 4 runs. Even getting to that number is a struggle most nights.

Always a pesky squad Tampa has a road record just above .500 coming into this one.

You have to hand it to the Rays for player development, especially pitchers. Erasmo Ramirez was plucked off the scrap heap and has become a reliable starter. Never one to dominate prior to his most recent start he had gone nine straight starts without giving up more than two runs. He has a 4-1 road record.

Red Sox

Though it is nothing new by now the Red Sox have to be the most disappointing team in the Majors this season. After retooling in the offseason I didn’t like the make up of the club but I didn’t see them being in last place, more like the .500 variety.

The pitching has been terrible and when you look at the offense it has been substandard too. They have to be wondering whether the investments in Hanley Ramirez and Pablo Sandoval are going to be nooses – Ramirez due to injury and the Panda due to performance

Logic dictates there should be some deals on deadline day but I am not sure that there is anyone on this team that others really want.

One promising development is rookie Eduardo Rodriguez. His overall numbers are just OK but if you look deeper you will see that most of the damage to his ERA etc was done in three starts. That means in the other 11 he has been giving Boston a great chance to win. All three of those outings were against powerful teams like Toronto and the Angels. That is definitely not what he will be facing tonight.

MLB Betting Trends:

  • Over is 5-1-2 in TB last 8 on grass.
  • Under is 9-2-4 in TB last 15 overall.
  • TB are 2-8 in their last 10 road games.
  • BOS are 3-12 in their last 15 overall.
  • BOS are 3-12 in their last 15 games on grass.
  • BOS are 4-9 in their last 13 Fri. games.
  • Under is 21-7 in the last 28 meetings in Boston.

4* MLB Betting Prediction: Boston -117

You can’t fade Boston every game and this is a situation you can get behind them.

MLB Baseball Score Prediction: Boston 5 – Tampa Bay 2

I am going to ride the rookie here. Boston is 7-4 when he starts and Tampa is not much of a threat.
