It turns out the Yankees might not be as terrible as originally thought and it is thanks to some familiar and unfamiliar faces.

On the familiar front Alex Rodriguez has launched four dingers already and looks locked in early while Masahiro Tanaka seems to be coming around too. In terms of some new faces fourth outfielder Chris Young has gone deep three times and free agent closer Andrew Miller has been lights out, striking out 12 in only 6 innings. The biggest weakness of this team is the starting pitching.
It is hard to figure out C.C. Sabathia and whether he is on track to being an effective starter. On the one hand he has a 5.68 ERA and is giving up more than a hit per inning. On the other he has a sterling 15/1 K/BB ratio while fanning more than a batter per inning, which is pretty dominant.

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle and as a backer we might not know from game to game what we are going to get.
Detroit
The Tigers have the best record in the American League as they enter this series against the Yankees. With the league’s second best ERA they do not appear to be missing Max Scherzer all that much aided I am sure by the fact that they are the top scoring team in the Majors, thanks the hot bats of J.D. Martinez and Jose Iglesias. If you think that means perennial MVP candidate Miguel Cabrera is off to a slow start, guess again, you are right. He is only hitting .426. Second on the club.
The common wisdom heading into the season was that the American League was going to eat up Alfredo Simon. Results to day have proven otherwise. Though not dominating he is 2-0 with a WHIP under 1. The burly righty was money against Pittsburgh in his last start so I guess we will have to watch him for a while longer before we arrive at any conclusions.

This is a so-so matchup.

Sabathia will be a fade target most of the time but I am not yet sold on Simon. This one could go over by the 5th.
