In a battle of division leaders, the Kansas City Royals open up a three-game set on Monday at the Houston Astros, who has maintained its grip on the top spot in the AL West with its potent offense.

However, it was Houston’s (43-34) pitching that allowed it to notch a pair of wins over the New York Yankees, including a 3-1 triumph on Sunday.
And while Collin McHugh was the hero in Sunday’s contest, a large part of the Astros offense has come from rookie Carlos Correra, who is 5-for-8 with three runs scored, three doubles and a home run in the last two games.

But he will now face a Royals (43-28) starting pitching staff that has been strong over its four-game winning streak, allowing just nine runs total.
Right-hander Joe Blanton will try to keep the Royals streak alive in Game 1 on Monday. The veteran has won his last two starts since moving into the rotation, including a win at Seattle last Monday, allowing just a single run on two hits, while sitting down seven over six innings. Blanton 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA in three road games this season.
The Astros will counter with rookie Lance McCullers. The 21-year-old , who is making his first career appearance against Kansas City, was on the wrong side of a 2-1 loss his last time out, despite yielding one run on four hits in six innings versus the Los Angeles Angels. McCullers is 2-0 with a 1.17 ERA in four home starts.

Blanton, although spending most of his time since 2013 from the pen, has come on strong, and I look for that to continue on Monday, as the Royals take this one, 4-3.
